10 Moms. 10 Stories.  One Night.

The Brown Mama Monologues is an annual showcase of 10 African-American mothers telling unique stories about the trials and triumphs of mothering in color.  Our show both gives a platform to Black mothers in need of an opportunity to share their motherhood narrative, and provides an opportunity to diversify and add color to the American motherhood narrative.  In 2020, we will host a show in Pittsburgh on Saturday, May 9th at the August Wilson Cultural Center and we will host a show in Maryland at the Bowie Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, September 19, 2020.

The Speakers

As of 2020, 40 women have participated in the Brown Mama Monologues showcase.  Our show has tackled tough issues like abortion and single motherhood, and has chronicled the lighter side of Black momlife with presentations on being a stay-at-home mom and the miracle of adoption.  The Brown Mama Monologues sets out to prove that Black mothers are not a monolith and that our stories are just as vast and varied as the Black experience in America.  Overall, our goal is to celebrate the voyage of mothering in color.
