Diversifying the American motherhood narrative

The Brown Mama Monologues is an annual showcase of African-American mothers telling unique stories about the trials and triumphs of Black motherhood in America.  Our show amplifies the voices and lived experiences of Black mothers and adds diversity, depth and variety to the overall American motherhood narrative.

In 2021, we hosted two live-streamed showcases with a captive audience of over 600 live attendees. Our May showcase featured moms from Pittsburgh and our December showcase chronicled the stories of moms from the DC Metro and NYC regions.

We are excited to showcase 6 more moms in 2022 with in-person and virtual performances.  Our in-person showcase will take place Saturday, May 28th at Emerald City Pittsburgh located at 213 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.  The virtual showcase will take place Wednesday, June 8th via Crowdcast.

The Storytellers

As of 2021, 39 women have participated in the Brown Mama Monologues showcase.  Our show has tackled tough issues like abortion and single motherhood, and has shown the lighter side of Black momlife with stories on adoption and raising vegan kids.  The Brown Mama Monologues sets out to prove that Black mothers are not a monolith and that our stories are just as vast and varied as the Black experience in America.  Overall, our goal is to celebrate the voyage of mothering-in-color, while dismantling the negative stereotypes that often plague Black women.
